Lenguas en contacto en los obrajes añileros novohispanos: anotaciones acerca de un muestrario de voces

Abstract

The two most important works describing the indigo process in the enlightened century come from a short document attributed to the Franciscan Juan de Dios del Cid, entitled El Puntero Apuntado (1741); and from another volume of greater scientific quality: El Tratado del xiquilite by J. M. Mociño (1799), an enlightened physician and botanist who took part in the II Royal Botanical Expedition. Our study aims to explore the linguistic consequences of this intercultural contact. To do so, we will analyse the words that are incorporated from other languages, taking into account, in relation to their origin, the delimitation between the proximate and the remote base, which will allow us to discover the languages that have functioned as an intermediary channel. In the same way, we will take a closer look at the semantic changes provided by information from lexicographical repertoires, as well as from the most relevant lexical corpus databases to date.
