Abstract

This paper studies the diffusion of Mineralogy in Spain during
the early 19th century. Mineralogy was a new scientific discipline at the
time, so it reached Spain through the translation of German and French
treatises. The results in Spanish vary depending on both the translator’s
expertise and the recipients of the translated product. Such variation is analysed by comparing the translation of Karsten’s works by Andrés Manuel
del Río and of Blondeau’s by González Vara y Alvarado y de la Peña.
These authors are good instances of the twofold understanding of translation
mentioned above.
