The lexicological study of mathematical terminology in the
nineteenth century is still yet to be done, as well as the analysis of the implications of this terminology in the field of the lexicography. In both
cases Felipe Picatoste contributed with his linguistics works. In this research,
we will focus on the analysis of a wide group of mathematical terms
collected by Picatoste in his Vocabulario matemático-etimológico (1862). Those
terms are characterized because they have not been recorded by any
of the last three editions of the academic dictionary published at the late
nineteenth century. The goal is to find out whether the Academy had
included these words into the subsequent editions of its general dictionary
using this lexicographic material. Moreover, and simultaneously, the
convenience of its reception in the Nuevo diccionario histórico de la lengua
española will be assessed.
