Studies on the Diccionario enciclopédico hispano-americano
(DEHA, 1887-1910), published in Barcelona by Montaner y Simón, have
revealed that it drew on a wide variety of sources, one of which was the
Diccionario general de arquitectura e ingeniería (DGAI, 1877-1908) by Pelayo
Clairac. This work was used specifically to prepare definitions of technical
terms and extend the encyclopaedic content. To further explore the
link between these two works, in this paper we present a comparative
study of articles on electricity and its practical applications included in
the two dictionaries. The examples given, taken from a corpus of 314
terms, provide consistent data on how the publisher of the DEHA used
Clairac’s dictionary and to what extent.
