El calepino Tarasco-Español del siglo XVI; método lexicográfico

Abstract

In 1574 the Franciscan, Friar Juan Baptista de Lagunas
published in New Spain an opus composed by a grammar, dictionary
and religious texts in the Tarascan language. The Dictionary was described
by the author as a Calepino, this qualification in the absence of
auctoritas for the Tarascan language was essentially oral, was justified on
the basis of its equivalence with etymology given that the author considered
that in this manner he would have access to «the truthfull origin of
the dictions».

An overview of the articles will be presented. Each of them is introduced
by a root followed by its paradigm, this disposition allowed Lagunas
to attract attention to the aglutinative structure of Tarascan. Furthermore
when necessary the author introduced synonyms, antonyms,
homonyms and also, though seldom, grammatical, phonological and
sociological information.
