The aim of the paper is to keep studying the history of loanwords
of Gypsy origin according to the way they are treated in differential dictionaries of Latin American Spanish. Today we have taken into
consideration two dictionaries of Cuban Spanish, Diccionario provincial, by
Esteban Pichardo (1836, 1849, 1862 y 1875), and Un catauro de cubanismos,
by Fernando Ortiz (1923). Although in numbers our results are quite
modest, we are firmly convinced that from the qualitative point of view
their value for the history of Spanish in Cuba during the period between
1820 and 1920 approximately should not be neglected. Another factor
that we have to take into account is the historical and social-cultural
background that is present in every dictionary and that is a vital condition
for the structure of their macro and microstructures. In order to
verify the data given by dictionaries, we always try to look for a complementary
textual documentation for every lexical item we study here.
