This work is our initial approach to a type of legal document
of great philological interest, the sea protest. Although our primary
interest focuses on the nautical and naval area, its study has also enabled
us to enter the intricate world of commercial-legal terminology. Thus,
based on the economic structure of Indian trade and by analysing 18th
century archival documentation, we have reached the laws that govern
modern Maritime Trade. The documentation studied is deposited in the
Cádiz Provincial Historical Archive and in the Historical Archive of the
University of Santiago de Compostela. In short, the ultimate aim is to
continue to draw attention to the value of archival documentation when
tracing the history of the Spanish language, particularly regarding aspects
that affect historical nautical and naval lexicology and lexicography.
