This essay is structured in two parts –description of the
manuscript with signature «Contratación, 3251, L. 1», preserved in Section
3, Casa de Contratación, of the Archivo General de Indias in Seville,
and individual analysis of eighteen forms documented in early modern
Spanish within the described manuscript– and has two main aims: to
describe the etymology and linguistic history of the selected vocabulary
and relate it to the sociolinguistic circumstances (contact between languages
and registers), which surrounded the writing of the manuscript in
the Seville emporium at the beginning of the 16th century.
