Abstract

This paper offers a selection of voices that testify to the Renaissance authors’ efforts to find an adequate and precise terminology for new scientific and technical designations. The terminological proce-dures correspond, on the one hand, to metaphors endowed with new meanings given to patrimonial voices, especially those relating to the human body, but also to actions and even feelings, through the application of analogy; on the other hand, to the borrowing of Greco-Latin terms, driven by the strong current of translation. We provide some examples, such as garganta, gola, lengüeta, vientre, guiñar, dar guiñadas, sudar, amistad, ene-mistad, afecto; meteoro, meteoroscópica, planisferio, maquinación, maquinatoria, esce-nografía, icnografía or dióptrica (throat, glue, tongue, belly, wink, yaw, sweat, friendship, enmity, affection; meteor, meteoric, planisphere, machination, machinated, scenography, ichnography dioptric) and cultisms sometimes used with new meanings, such as ortografía and geografía (orthography and geography). We also include a series of illustrative images of these phe-nomena.
