In English and other Germanic languages, the concept of phrasal verb is widely used to refer to a type of construction consisting of a verbal base and a particle, generally an adverb or a preposition. However, this concept is not equally accepted in Romance languages. This article aims to conduct a brief study on this phenomenon, which we have termed verbo sintagmático, as applied to Spanish, as well as to analyze the treatment that this type of construction has received in the dictionaries published by the Real Academia Española from its inception to the most recent edition.
