Medieval texts give us very useful information about some words
related to the overland routes and waterways, which were used by astronomers
and afterwards by navigators. Moreover, some particular objects,
like war or hunting weapons and parts of navigation instruments, as well as
their applications, give rise to some verbs and nouns which will be used to express
the concept of ‘direction’ and others connected to it. I intend to show
how metaphorical and metonymic processes act on the evolution of these
words and to present a chronology of changes.
