The aim of this text is to observe how denominations in -ismo
have expanded for centuries in Portuguese (section 1) according with its
source (section 2). The analysis is focused on Portuguese denominations
and also on names imported or translated from other classic or modern
languages. Section 3 describes the thematic areas of these denominations
(i) Human and Social Sciences, Beliefs and Thought (ii) Sciences and
Tecnology, (iii) Sciences of Life, (iv) Arts and (v) Leisure time, Sports,
and Daily life. Section 4 is dedicated to the semantics of the suffix, its innovative variation, in correlation with the thematic area in which the
names are included.
