Abstract

This research analyses the lexicon of fashion documented in the written press in Spanish from the 19th century, which is especially relevant for the history of our language. Specifically, the object of study is el Periódico de las Damas (1822), which has twenty-five published numbers and was a pioneer in offering the usual content of publications aimed at women, as stated by Palomo Vázquez (2014). Our objective mainly ana-lyses the names of garments or fabrics described in the section of fashion of the issues of the selected publication, as they permeate the innovations and trends of the time a priori. In conclusion, this paper contributes to the research on the historical lexicon of fashion in Spanish—carried out in works such as those of Montoya Ramírez (2008), Sánchez Orense (2008) or Štrbáková (2013)—by compiling, sequencing and adding to the reper-toire the terms under study according to the methodology of historical lexicography.
