During the last two decades (1990-2010) Romanian technical
lexicography has reflected the situation of the technical terms borrowed
into Romanian through specialised literature and through media. Developments
have followed a single direction: that offered by the translations
given in bilingual and polyglot dictionaries. These instruments are useful
to both specialists and translators because they enable the readers to find
the equivalents of the notions and phrases in various languages used as
lingua franca. Nevertheless, they cannot supply the information offered by
monolingual works. Nowadays, Romanian lexicography is affected by the
lack of a revised, updated and improved variant of the Technical lexicon,
a dictionary published more than 50 years ago. Technical lexicography
would benefit from such an enterprise which could provide precise and well-argued information in order to make both specialists and the public
understand a variety of notions, concepts, processes and phenomena.
