Abstract

This article analyzes the attitudes names created by the suffixes
-ism and -ist in the lexicon of modern Spanish. For this purpose, we start
from voices of both morphemes admitted in the Spanish academic lexicographical
tradition, from the Diccionario de Autoridades (1726-1770)
until the twenty-second edition (2001). Moreover, taking into account the
receipt of behavioral systems in the dictionaries of geographical areas of
Latin American Spanish in order to determine if the pattern of attitudes in
-ism and -ist works the same way in the two diatopic varieties. The study
aims to identify the lines of semantic evolution of attitudes created by the
two suffixes in the history of the Spanish language. Finally, we also study
the ideological component found in many of these neologisms.
