La etimología del futuro de subjuntivo en oraciones condicionales, temporales y relativas: el FUTURUM PERFECTUM latino

Abstract

The present paper sustains that the Spanish future subjunc-tive derives solely from the Latin paradigm of the future perfect. First, incongruencies in other hypotheses on the future subjunctive’s origin are brought to light. Secondly, it is shown that the Latin future perfect > Span-ish future subjunctive has always, from Latin times until today, been used in the protasis/subordinate sentence of objectively contingent conditionals, temporals and relatives whenever an explicit reference to the future is intendend. Finally, it is clarified that the Latin future perfect and perfect subjunctive, the latter having often been considered as playing a part in the formation of the Spanish future subjunctive, were very well distinguishable in Latin, and therefore no hybrid paradigma (future per-fecto + perfect subjunctive > Spanish future subjunctive) can have evolved.
