Abstract

Probate inventories are an unparalleled source for identifying
objects that were part of everyday life in the past and for the
linguistic study of the different labels, which sometimes include
terms specific to each of the geographical areas studied. From the
methodological point of view, the onomasiological organization of the vocabulary is essential in these lexicographic tasks, since the
establishment of categories helps to identify the meanings of the
terms and also relate them to others in the same field, which, in
turn, helps identify synonyms. Under these assumptions, this paper
deals with the analysis of the words restricted to the category of
«household linen» in six probate inventories from Bilbao dated between
1551 and 1674.
