This article analyzes the adjectives that are used in inventories
in order to characterize animals preferentially according to
their colour, but also to other features such as the kind of horns, in
the case of cattle, and even age. All terms analyzed here are documented
in a corpus formed by reports of assets (testaments, letters
of dowry, distributions of inheritances, etc.) coming from the Archivo
Histórico Provincial de León, belonging to La Bañeza’s
County Court Judicial District, located in south-west León and in
part of northwest Zamora. These documents are from the 18th century,
the last part of the 17th century and the early years of the 19th
century.
