Abstract

The study of historical events may help us explain and
understand the series of transformations that Spanish underwent in
its Atlantic expansion at the end of the fifteenth century. In the
case of the Spanish of the Canary Islands, the analysis of diverse ethnic elements may account for some of the peculiar characteristics
of its vocabulary, such as the scarcity of pre-Hispanic indigenous
forms or the importance of the Portuguese settlers and their contribution.
Historical records confirm these facts through the presence
in early documents of some words still heard today, many of which
were borrowed from the different groups who colonized the islands
and who established a new society after the conquest.
