Abstract

From registry records housed in Archivo Histórico Provincial
de Cádiz, I extracted those words that stand out for their innovative
character or their geographic distribution. The lexical sample
illustrates the use of general vocabulary alongside words attested
with less frequency or at a later date in the historical record, but
reflects likewise a more specific vocabulary, with pre-sence of rural and daily terms of everyday life specific to lexical fields relevant to
this region, and with contribution of voices related with the agricultural
and maritime activities of the zone. This documentation from
the first decades of the 17th century, moment of the growth of mercantile
activity in the city, port of departure and gathering point for
products and people setting off on the Route of the Indies, allows us
to observe the introduction of New World vocabulary incorporated
into the vocabulary of these men through contact with the New
World.
